Gautrain Precautionary Measures

As the COVID-19 infection rate escalates across South Africa and the world at large, we are mindful of the fact that some of our staff and passengers are also at risk to be infected during this precarious time.

As a mode of public transport, the health and safety of our staff and passengers is crucial for us. We have therefore taken great care to implement numerous precautionary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on the Gautrain system. Stations, trains, buses and midi-buses are cleaned and disinfected at regular intervals throughout the day and, to help maintain high levels of hygiene, we have placed almost 100 alcohol-based hand sanitizers across the ten Gautrain stations. We have also made hand sanitizers available on the buses. Furthermore, our staff have been issued with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in accordance with their specific job function. All staff and passengers must always wear a face mask whilst at Gautrain stations and onboard trains, buses or midi-buses thereby limiting any potential, unintended exposure to fellow staff and/or passengers.

In the event of a Gautrain staff member testing positive for COVID-19, we will immediately implement the following protocol to help curtail the spread of the virus. We will:

  1. Chemically decontaminate the staff member’s personal work area, as well as the station/s that he/she have been working at.
  2. Commence contact-tracing as per the guidelines provided by the World Health Organization and our Department of Health.
  3. Other staff members who were in direct contact with the infected staff member would be required to self-isolate. He/she may return to work only if he/she tests negative for COVID-19 and has no symptoms associated with the virus.
  4. Staff and passengers who have symptoms associated with COVID-19 must stay at home and consult with their medical practitioner.
  5. Upon being informed that a passenger who has been travelling by Gautrain has tested positive for COVID-19, we will, as soon as possible, chemically decontaminate the station/s, bus or midi-bus that he/she has utilized. But rest assured that in any event, we have employed the services of special cleaning staff to chemically wipe-down and disinfect all touchpoints, such as handrails, throughout the day. This proactive measure helps us to ensure that the Gautrain system is clean and hygienic at all times.

Please be reminded that random screening of passengers is conducted at stations in collaboration with the Department of Health field workers.
